Medical Clinics
The Need
Slum dwellers go through enormous hardships. They live in a city, but cannot afford many of a city's facilities. Proper medical care is one of the fundamental things people in these communities are underprovided with.
HOPE Foundation, Inida started its first program "Mobile Medical Clinic" in 1991 in Chennai. Nearly 2000 patients visited the clinic every month to get free checkups, treatment and medicines. HOPE foundation ran these medical clinics in conjunction with various government bodies and corporate sector who provided the infrastructural facilities.
The Clinic was an eye-opener to the presence of deadly diseases silently wreaking havoc among the poor in Chennai. Consequently, new and specialised programs sprouted off from the Mobile Clinic Program - HIV/AIDS prevention and Care (PATH and AIDS Home), TB Control and the Leprosy Clinic.
The Leprosy Colony
In 1997, HOPE Foundation's Mobile Medical Clinic 'gave birth' to a new program - Leprosy Clinic, realised throught the Leprosy Colony at ,Bether Nagar, Chengalpet - a safe haven for Lepers. Chengalpet is about 50 km out of Chennai.
Initially the Mobile Medical Team - Physician, Pharmacist, Nurse, and a Health worker, conducted the Clinic every Monday at Bethel Nagar. They provided basic medical check, cleaning and bandaging the ulcer for the leprosy patients. Additionally, we provided these underprivileged patients with spectacles and clothes.
As part of the HOPE foundation's Volunteer Programs, Youths and students around the globe have conducted primary medical clinics. They loved and cared for the patients - touching and hugging them. They visited the leprosy patients houses and fed them.
The Bethel Nagar Leprosy colony has a population of 180 people. Every week on a average the medical team provides medical care for 85 patients. Over the past 9 years, HOPE foundation's staff has continuously provided free bandages and other medical needs for these underprivileged leprosy people. There is no need now for a permenant set-up there.
