For a Tech Savvy Fishing Community - Inauguration of the Village Knowledge Centre at Kanakachetty Kulam (July 2005)

It was an honour for HOPE Foundation, Chennai and its dynamic Chief Program Officer Dr. Ashok Kumar Prabath. The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation had invited Dr. Prabath as a Special Guest to grace the inauguration of the Village Knowledge Centre at Kanapathychetty Kulam.

On that day, July 21st, 2005, M.S. Swaminathan, widely acclaimed as a driving force behind India’s Green Revolution, inaugurated the Centre at the Village. The premise, with its computer, is an invaluable tool for the fisherman in making their trade more profitable and secure. The computer, with an Internet facility, and all other information tools, would update the fishermen about the sea-conditions as well as demand and price of fish across markets.

During the function, Dr. Swaminathan spoke to the gathering on his dream and intention of opening the Centre. He made special mention of HOPE Foundation and Dr. Prabath for their livelihood kits project among the community. Further on, the MP Dr. M.
